The other two CDs I have languishing in my collection by S.E.T.I. are nice T.Dream / Space electronica type pieces with textured mulch, beats and garbled voices aplenty. "Probe" on the other hand is a completely different kettle of fish. Not that I would recommend putting fish into a kettle unless you wanted to know what your grandma’s groin area smelt like.   Space plays an important part in this recording as actual sounds from space have been manipulated, treated and generally fucked with by both acts to produce…well…something extraordinary. Something indefinable. Something this side of strangeville. Experimental dark ambient music may not sum it up completely but it’s the nearest comparison I can muster up or think of. Definitely experimental. Definitely dark. But it’s more than this. So much more. The sounds that emerge kind of irritate and get under the skin. Squeaks, squalls, blips, bleeps and rasping sounds abound along with the ambient pieces. ‘Probe’ requires a great deal of concentration and perseverance from the listener to fully appreciate the artistry involved in this recorded. Only after repeated plays will the sounds make any type of sense to the seemingly random chaos that permeates and surrounds it.   If you have an open mind, not filled with preconceptions or bias about experimental music, then "Probe" is seriously worth investigating. You’ll only get out of it the time you’re willing to invest in this bewildering and quite exquisite in places recording.

This is a collaboration between two familiar and well respected producers of electronica making half a dozen tracks of ambient music that cannot be described as background. Divided into phases, they start with theContainment State, in which alien noises are assembled to make a semblance of notes that are loosely connected. Forget all about standard musical notations of chords and beats because here they deal in sound texturing but not on a loud script rather what you might expect at the fringes of space. It's quiet apart from the occasional loud static and could easily be described as thought provoking in its intensity. Quiet and intense don't usually appear in the same sentence, but on this piece it does. The Polarisation State uses similiar background sounds as often heard in sci-fi programmes but is much bolder with its rhythmical noises that are quite abrasive at times. On Primary Impulses, the sounds are less ambient and more difficult to describe. It's as though the experiment had been switched to running itself as as hard as the machine tried to break free of the constraints by kicking and mainly screaming, the end result shows the battle that is eventually won by the ambiences. Neutral Separation has low backround noises that are punctuated by very loud vibrating sounds that could easily have you reaching for the volume control, but you'll have to be very fast to achieve this as they are only short bursts and then its back to quiet backround noises. This is finale Assimilation State again features the ambiences and bursts of frequencies that are designed to upset the fragile ears. Dealing with textures and sound manipulation rather than melodies and rhythms, this CD will not be to everyone's taste and naturally will find few followers during daytime radio hours. But outside theses times, when experienced, mature listeners get home from work and switch on their expensive music players only those willing to open their minds will gain the benefit.

"Probe" opatrzona jest następującym hasłem przewodnim: "Człowiek stał się informacją wraz z odkryciem DNA". Trudno o bardziej trafny komentarz do zjawisk dźwiękowych rozgrywających się przed naszymi uszami. Całość tchnie specyficznym chłodem sterylnego laboratorium, poprzetykanym drobnymi poświstami, zakłóceniami oraz falami przebiegów mikroelektrycznych o niezidentyfikowanym pochodzeniu. Wszystko zawieszone jest w niepokojącej i obcej atmosferze, aseptycznych pomieszczeń wypełnionych dziwną aparaturą. Cały czas obecna jest tu atmosfera wyczekiwania na kolejne stadium procesu badawczo-rozwojowego. To tutaj właśnie, pod lupą i mikroskopem powstają biocybernetyczne, post-humanoidalne twory, które (kto wie...?) w przyszłości zastąpią rodzaj ludzki. "Probe" stylistycznie ciąży w stronę muzyki elektroakustycznej oraz izolacjonizmu z dodatkiem niepokojących elementów rodem z horroru s-f. Dwaj autorzy nie starają się jednak naiwnie przestraszyć słuchacza, a raczej stawiają go twarzą w twarz z czymś nieokreślonym i totalnie obcym ludzkiemu pojmowaniu. Taka jest też i sama muzyka - czasami tu i ówdzie przewiną się marne szczątki śladowej struktury melodycznej czy nerwowego rytmu. Reszta to surowy soundtrack nadający się do następnej części "Obcego", a może... po prostu wizja codzienności pokoleń, które nadejdą wiele lat po nas? Realizacja tchnie cyfrową syntetycznością pierwszego planu (gdzie wiją się erupcje dźwięków komputerowo przetworzonych do granic możliwości) połączoną z gładkim, monotonnym i spogłosowanym tłem. Lokalizacja detali jest wyśmienita, a chwilami mamy do czynienia niemal z dźwiękiem dookólnym - to wszystko powoduje, że przez ponad godzinę czujemy się straszliwie wyobcowani i z trudem wracamy do naszej wyjątkowo kolorowej rzeczywistości.

Kolejne wydawnictwo wytwórni Vivo przynosi efekty współpracy muzyków reprezentujących elektronicznę awangardę. Pod pseudonimem SETI kryje się Andrew Lagowski, aktywny od 1982r. weteran industrialu, zaś Si_COMM to Barry Nichols- jeden z jego młodszych uczniów. Album zawiera muzykę wyrastającą z niepokoju obu twórców o przyszłość gatunku ludzkiego w obliczu coraz bardziej inwazyjnych procesów technologicznych oraz manipulacji medycznych w ludzkim genomie. Składają się nań zimne i metaliczne dźwięki odtwarzające proces przemiany człowieka w maszynę. Niepokojące.

Diese CD vom polnischen Label Vivo ist sehr interessant, da durch sie der Begriff "Tonträger" als ein anderer Teil seiner umfassenderen und nicht tagtäglichen Bedeutung definiert wird. Typischerweise verbindet man mit dem Inhalt einer Audio-CD normale Musik, die mehr oder weniger tanzbar ist und sich zwischen geschmacklich traumhaft eingängig bis hammermäßig abstoßend bewegt. Des Weiteren wurden für Entspannungszwecke auch schon Geräusche aus der Natur auf CD gepresst, genauso wie das gesprochene Wort in Form von Hörbüchern oder Hörspielen.

Auf "Probe" von S.E.T.I. & Si_COMM ist nun ein Teil der elektronischen Klangerzeugung zu hören, der zwar so gesehen zum Gebiet der Musik gezählt werden kann, jedoch definitiv nicht tanzbar ist. Nur digitale Geräusche und Effekte, ab und zu mit leichten Flächen im Hintergrund versehen und das ohne Rhythmusspur. "Experimental" wäre die Kategorie für diesen Sound. Damit ist auch definitiv verbunden, dass die Hörerschaft dieser CD nur einen relativ kleinen Interessentenkreis einschließen wird und dass man diese CD nicht einfach so in den Player einlegen und sich anschließend berieseln lassen kann. Denn spätestens nach dem einmaligen Hören wird das gute Stück aufgrund der Andersartigkeit vermutlich im Plattenregal verschwinden, es sei denn, man plant multimediale Aktionen oder sonstige Veranstaltungen, zu denen spezielle Geräuschkulissen verwendet werden sollen.

Wer nun allerdings denkt, hier wurden einfach wahllos ein paar Sounds mit der Hoffnung zusammen gestellt, dass sich ein Käufer findet, dem empfehle ich einen Blick ins Booklet. Denn darin steht geschrieben, womit sich diese CD befasst. Es geht um die Evolution der Menschheit. Die Urbanisierung des Universums ist für den Menschen der nächstlogische Schritt zur Ausbreitung seiner Spezies und damit verbunden ist eine Anpassung des Individuums an diese neue Umgebung. Durch die Entschlüsselung der DNA wurde der Mensch Information, die genutzt werden kann um ihn mit Elektronik zu einer vollkommeneren Lebensform zu entwickeln. Und diese Neuentstehung ist nun auf dem Silberling in 6 Phasen wieder zu finden. Sie beginnt mit dem Stadium der Eingrenzung, gefolgt vom Stadium der Polarisierung und des Übergangs. Danach folgen die ersten Impulse, denen sich die neuronale Teilung anschließt. Zum Abschluss kommt es zur Anpassung an das neue Leben. All das sollte der geneigte Hörer auf jeden Fall beim Hören von "Probe" im Hinterkopf behalten, damit der Zusammenhang zwischen der aufgezeigten, zukünftigen Welt und dem Sound der CD hergestellt werden kann. So gesehen ist es ein Geräusch-Soundtrack zu einem (Kurz-)Film, der nicht existiert. Und in Anbetracht der Hintergrundinformationen wirkt dieser dann ab und zu doch sehr bedrohlich.

Die 3,5 Sterne ergeben sich auf der einen Seite durch die Andersartigkeit, fernab der Musik, die damit nur sehr wenige Hörer in den Bann ziehen dürfte. Auf der anderen Seite könnte jedoch die Phantasie durch diese Weltvorstellung mitsamt ihrer soundmäßigen Umsetzung angeregt werden und damit Stoff für weitere Projekte, Romane oder was auch immer liefern.

Kennis is muziek? Weten: het werkterrein van Andrew Lagowski (S.E.T.I.) en Barry G. Nichols (Si_COMM). Met Probe stellen ze hun muziek parallel aan de ontwikkeling van de mens door middel van het ontdekken en leren kennen van DNA-structuren. Daar zal het ongeveer wel op neerkomen. Lastig hoor zo?n wetenschappelijke brok tekst in het albumhoesje! Mogen we ook van de muziek genieten? Als je geduld hebt en zeer goed oplet, zit dat er misschien wel in. Probe bestaat uit zes fazes ?Phase 1: Containment State?, ?Phase 2: Polarisation State?, ?Phase 3: Transition State?, ?Phase 4: Primary Impulses?, ?Phase 5: Neural Separation? en, even ademhalen, ?Phase 6: Assimilation State?.
Minuscule ambientstructuurtjes afwisselen elkaar af zonder dat het schokkende resultaten oplevert. De aandacht erbij houden is erg lastig en vergt veel concentratie. Geen makkelijk album dus. Ga je iets anders doen tijdens het luisteren dan ben je zo de draad kwijt. Elke faze wordt traag met zeer minimale electronica opgebouwd en weer net zo traag afgebroken. De dynamiek is ver te zoeken maar de kracht van Probe ligt in de subtiele wijzigingen in geluid. Knisperende ruis wordt afgewisseld met stotterende effecten die weer snel in de achtergrond verdwijnen. Ik vraag me af wat nu het precieze doel van dit album is, een interview is in dit geval waarchijnlijk nuttiger dan deze recensie. Makers, willen jullie opstaan en uitleg komen geven?

S.E.T.I. & Si_COMM - "Probe" CD - Andrew Lagowski's S.E.T.I. project teams up with fellow UK-based sound architect B.G. Nichols (aka Si_COMM) for a spaced-out disc of textural electronics. Developed around the theme of technology's fusion with biology (and DNA's inherent similarities to digital data), this journey begins with the atmospheric 'Containment State'. Later tracks sulk along with a vaguely ominous vibe, barely making their blippy, glitchy presence known. 'Primary Impulses' sizzles dangerously like severed electrical wires, but it's not until 'Neural Separation' that chunks of skittering noise join the fray, generally shocking listeners who have become complacent and comfortable with the disc's overall ambient nature. Superb work and a joy for those interested in a more scientific approach to sound construction.

"Probe" č il frutto della collaborazione tra S.E.T.I., il progetto di Andrew Lagowski, e Si_COMM, progetto solista di Barry G. Nichols, degli ECM 323, dall'unione di queste due menti malate č uscito fuori questo interessantissimo disco.. ambient alienante, divergenze experimental, oscuri suoni dalla natura, inquietanti rumori dallo spazio.. questo č "Probe".. diviso in 6 fasi, questo disco ci porta in strane dimensioni.. sembra di trovarsi in mezzo a una foresta, di notte, e di avere dei contatti con forme di vita extraterrestri.. suoni elettronici che tolgono il respiro, macchinari che captano segnali spezzando la quiete notturna della natura..  insetti, volatili, alberi, cespugli, vengono scossi da queste onde magnetiche, da queste radiazioni aliene.. "Probe" ci porta in questa dimensione, una dimensione tra l'eccitazione di avere dei contatti con altre forme di vita e la paura, la paura dell'ignoto, la paura del buio..

.."Probe" in definitiva č proprio un bel disco, elettronica sperimentale ma non troppo, suggestioni spaziali , incontri alieni, e la paura di ritrovarsi da soli nel bosco di notte..

Nichols. Which sort of leaves you wondering why, if that's true, there are
still so many dumbasses wandering around downtown.
  Taking as its inspiration an obscure NASA memorandum dating from the
1960s, which proposed that man could be engineered for space rather than the
other way round, Probe seeks to link software with wetware as it engineers a
series of complex conceptual pathways towards the 'post-human'. Like
Dopplereffek's recent Linear Accelerator, it creates intricate events out of
bold and clear thinking.

Suoni dell'incomunicabilita, ai confini del silenzio, di scena due pionieri della sperimentazione elettronica contemporanea quali Andrew Lagowski e Barry Nichols, qui rispettivamente nei panni di S.E.T.I. e Si_Comm, tra i tanti progetti paralleli del duo. Collaborazione questa che trova entrambi proiettati su parametri di suono siderali e alieni, a meta strada tra biologico e cibernetico, a voler prefigurare un futuro prossimo da un punto di vista comunque distante nel tempo e nello spazio, un futuro quindi in fase di definizione ma comunque imminente. Tutto il lavoro, che non a caso prende in prestito il nome da una sonda spaziale, scorre tra giochi di impulsi e frequenze che galleggiano sul silenzio, suoni che aleggiano in un clima sinistro e di tensione costante, quasi come fossero catturati nell'etere da un'antenna, suoni di cui se ne percepisce a stento il senso ma che vengono comunque assimilati ad un livello piu profondo di coscienza. Ne deriva un ascolto intrigante per un mind trip diviso in 6 episodi dal carattere similare per gli intenti meno che per le architetture sonore. Un disco consigliato per quelle calde notti estive, con la mente disposta a vagare.

Znowu bardzo ładnie wydany krążek przez polskie Vivo. Tym razem otrzymujemy album S.E.T.I. nagrany wraz z Si_Comm. S.E.T.I. to nikt inny jak Andrew Lagowski znany choćby ze współpracy z Lustmordem, oraz naszym rodzimym Zenialem. "Po odkryciu DNA człowiek stał się informacją". Takie oto zdanie możemy znależć we wkładce do płyty. Wydaje się, że Lagowski, chce właśnie swoją muzyką przedstawić nam taką wizję. I trzeba przyznać, że robi to ze znakomitym skutkiem. "Probe" to jakby ilustracja ery "postludzkiej". Nie znajdziemy tutaj dark ambientu. O wiele bliżej jest tu do dokonań niemieckich postindustrialowców z Klangkrieg. Eksperymentalne dźwiękowe kolaże, soniczne ataki, cyfrowe bulgoty tworzą zimną i bezduszną atmosferę. Świat bez ludzi? Świat opanowany wyłącznie przez maszyny? Zdaje się, że tak. S.E.T.I. & Si_Comm dali temu wyraz na "Probe". Gorąco polecam. [10]

"Man Became information with the discovery of DNA" reads the inner sleeve of the latest recording Probe by S.E.T.I. (Andrew Lagowski) and Si_Comm (Baz Nichols). And with six tracks the duo sets to explore the states of illusory containment, transition, polarization, assimilation and a variety of imagined micro-worlds of being beyond naked recognition. At first they start by creating what might sound like the mapping of a rainforest, digging gently beyond the first layer of its surface, looking for the most diminutive terrestrial debris. They use scanner devices and other encoded feedback registers as mechanisms to find the key pulse of the land. 'Probe' is true to its title concept as they further link to watery depths that host a range of wavy radio-like signals shot like a laser into the din of the sound barrier. In a thickly woven contemporary sci-fi adventure, Lagowski and Nichols trek through terrain that offers multiple obstacles, steep voids and various oblique shards steering them through cavernous emptiness. On "Transition State" the ambient state of things is quite lucid, inching quietly through a field of bright white neon light. "Neural Separation" sounds like the purr of an airline hangar, a chamber that is quite contained, sealed airtight. And a series of tests is run to determine the complexities of any technical defaults. It's all quite synthetically precise and clean-room dustless, aside from a few minor fissures that are played in fractured rays and slight system imperfections. The audio chemistry of 'Probe' certainly evokes something deeply visionary.   HYPERLANGUAGE by Si_COMM & S.E.T.I. will be a sound environment specially commissioned by Ben Green for transmission on Resonance 104.4 FM on September 25th @ Midnight (1 Hour). This recording is a commissioned piece designed to thematically relate to the Probe recording.

Barry G. Nichols, as Si_COMM (mostly known for ECM 323) teamed up with Andrew Lagowski as S.E.T.I. (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence - also know for his other projects Legion, Terror Against Terror, Lustmord, Isolrubin BK), to put together "Probe", a limited eco-pack CD featuring six audio sci-fi titles. The experimental glitch-electronics contained herein, is the fruit of a collaboration of two artists that have always had an interest in outer- (or other-) worldy sonics and in the possibility of life outside our little planet. The quasi ambient formula used to generate these oniric sound bits is busier around the upper part of the whole frequency spectrum, while the lower register rumbling is only used to accentuate the disquieting atmospheres. It's interesting to note that even though the listening experience seems to be centered around melancholy and loneliness it actually represents the quantity of life-forms present in space, so in spite of the fact that it might evoke drifting cold soundscapes of desolation, it really is trying to picture the pollution of beings and how crowded it is. As their press release and CD's sleeve notes explain, this world is actually getting too small for us all and we have to start thinking with the right frame of mind to prepare for different types of possible scenarios in the future. As they are quick to point out, "man became information with the discovery of DNA" and "evolution is accelerated when technology fuses with biology", and then they go about depicting the possibility of post-humans being regolated by sound and visual pulses. I am sure Lagowski would love to live in such a society, because with his life-long career of generating sound pulses he'd probably be the master and the king ;-)

na początek słów kilka o autorach tego materiału; "probe" jest wynikiem współpracy a.lagowskiego [nagrywającego już m.inn. dla wytwórni touch] i b.nicholsa [odpowiedzialnego za nagrania si_comm oraz ecm 323]; tworząc wspólny materiał panowie wcielili się w rolę mrocznych wizjonerów, z niepokojem kreślących przyszłe losy rodzaju ludzkiego. całość jest więc swego rodzaju koncept-albumem i przyznać trzeba, iż właśnie w połączeniu idei i obrazującej jej muzyki tkwi siła tego albumu.
        projektowi przewodzi kilka podstawowych pojęć i haseł, wspólnie tworzących wizję post-modernistycznego człowieka [posthuman], który staną przed zadaniem rekonstrukcji i re-konfiguracji własnej struktury. oto bowiem w czasach wszechobecnej cyfrowości przestaliśmy nadążać za naszymi technologicznymi odpowiednikami. ich chłodna inteligencja, szybkość w przetwarzaniu danych oraz wytrzymałość sprawiły, iż będziemy musieli, prędzej czy później, upodobnić się właśnie do nich. "ewolucja przyspiesza z chwilą, gdy technologia łączy się z biologią" - mówią autorzy tego krążka roztaczając przed słuchaczem kilka bardzo mrocznych perspektyw i wskazując kierunki nieuniknionego rozwoju [bądź też, jak piszą artyści, "relokacji"]. zimnych i bezwględnych haseł jet tu więcej, przytaczając choćby "człowiek stał się zbiorem informacji odkąd odkryto dna" bądź twierdzenia na temat nowych, hybrydowych form istnienia. muzyka zawarta na albumie jest swoistą ścieżką dźwiękową do wszystkich tych niepokojących wizji, jest również ilustracją każdego z opisywanych etapów rozwoju: od stanu opanowania całościowej wiedzy o strukturze ludzkiej, aż po pełną asymilację z technologią. wszystko zaś dzieje się w oparach wszelkiego rodzaju szumów, cichych, permanentnych pisków i dronów. mroczny ambient będący wyrazem mrocznych wizji. wszystko pasuje do siebie bardzo dobrze, całość została gruntownie przemyślana i zaplanowana [bo czy w świecie cyfrowej ewolucji jest miejsce na improwizację?] i dla tych, których nie drażnią historie o nowych rzeczywistościach i cyber-ludziach - płyta ta na pewno okaże się wielką gratką.
        podsumowując - kolejna po "list of takers" scorna ciekawa pozycja w katalogu vivo records. pełen ambientu kojarzącego się z twórczością thomasa konera, mroczny i intrygujący album. najlepiej, zapewne, sprawdza się późnym wieczorem, w czasie gdy szum otaczających nas maszyn zdaje się być szczególnie wyraźny. i choć w porównaniu z teoretyczną nadbudową warstwa czysto muzyczna prezentuje się o wiele ciekawiej, to jednak warto potraktować "probe" jako kompletną całość, całkiem nieźle łączącą ideę i dźwięk.

Andrew Lagowski dürfte jeden Freund ambienter Musik abseits buntfröhlicher Chill Out Lounges ein Begriff sein, man denke z.B. an seine Projekte Legion, S.E.T.I. oder an die eher lärmorientierten Terror Against Terror (mit Brian Lustm?rd). Barry G. Nichols Projekt Si_Comm besitzt diesen Bekanntheitsgrad noch nicht, sollte aber durch diese Kollaboration mit Lagowski einiges an Boden gewinnen dürfen.   Auf "Probe" thematisieren Lagowski und Nichols die durch Wissenschaft und Technik voran getriebene Evolution des Menschen zu einem Lebewesen, welches den Anforderungen eines Lebens im Weltall standhält. Entsprechend klinisch kühl schleicht sich das Audiomaterial aus den Lautsprechern: Brummen der Maschinen, leises Sirren, vereinzelte Piepgeräusche, knisternde Datenleitungen, das Rauschen purer Informationen.   "Probe" bleibt erfreulich weit auf Distanz zum Pathos vieler (Dark)Ambient Produktionen und, was viel wichtiger erscheint, bringt durch gezielte Streuung akustischer Fehlinformationen zum Ausdruck, es hier nicht mit unreflektierter Technologiegläubigkeit oder Sci-Fic Romantik zu tun zu haben. Ein Punkt, der leider viel zu vielen ähnlich gelagerten Veröffentlichungen vollkommen abgeht.

Let's assume S.E.T.I. needs no introduction; you may wonder who Si_Comm is. Behind this name we find Barry G. Nichols, maybe an unfamiliar name for you, but in the last twenty years he wrote for a lot of magazines, such as Music From The Empty Quarter, EST, Immerse, Noisegate, Resonance and Sound Projector, and you may know what this is all about: a musical territory which covers a wide experimental range, and not commonly found in the one UK magazine missing from the above list. Nichols is also, with Linden Hale, ECM:23, who mainly present sound installations. Si_Comm is Nichols solo. Together with S.E.T.I.'s Andrew Lagowski he shares an interest in sounds from space, or maybe sounds sounding like they come from outer space. You can imagine these boys late at night with an antenna out of their window captured electro-magnetic activities from outer space and meanwhile, inside, the computer works over time to calculate all this data until the musical components are revealed: loops of soundwaves, frequencies forming a melody. I don't know wether this still counts as ambient music, I don't think so. The music is more alien (how appropiate) than to be relaxing; it's transmissions from an outside world, transmissions from life out there. Life that is not the question, but rather the question when it will manifest itself in a different way than it does now. But the way it does now, is not a problem. In fact, it's fine. It leaves a nice CD as a footprint.

In Genre-Kreisen schon jetzt als Album des Jahres gehandelt, reisen die
Briten Andrew Lagowski (aka S.E.T.I., ein Kürzel für Search For
Extraterrestrial Intelligence) und Barry Nichols (Si_Comm) akustisch in die

Odrycie DNA, sprawiło, iż człowiek okazał się informacją - stwierdza Andrew Lagowski, prezentując swą nową muzykę spod szyldu SETI poświęconą epoce post-człowieczej. Jak przystało na jednego z czołowych piewców inteligentnego dark ambinet, miast kreować wizje technopopowych cyborgów, Lagowski kreuje zagadkowe amorficzne pejzaże. Rzecz oparta na postindustrialnych korzeniach - abstrakcyjna, lecz w tajemniczej, aurze rytuału z psychoaktywnymi częstotliwościami. Dronowe chmury przecinają wypryski dźwiękowych pasożytów, których klikanie wyda się bliskie serc młodszemu pokoleniu. Metalicznemu szlifowi tych brzmień bliżej jednak do - przemielonych przez industrial - tradycji elektroakustycznych i live electronic lat 60., niż do cyfrowej sztampy.
